REVIEWS:

“A Vanguard TV Documentary” San Francisco Examiner
“Mr. Thomson’s career is traced with nice touches of illumination.” The New York Times
“One of TV’s rare gems.” New York Daily News
This classic documentary is a moving tribute to one of America’s foremost composers. It has been digitally remastered with restored picture and enhanced sound quality, featuring one hour of new material.

  • The program features Thomson at his witty and insightful best, with performances of his piano and orchestral works, including Thomson himself playing and singing a scene from his groundbreaking 1934 opera “Four Saints in Three Acts” with libretto by Gertrude Stein, its all black cast and cellophane sets, and features rare footage of the original 1934 production.
  • The film also includes a restored version of his irreverent and rousing “Filling Station” Ballet, recreated for this production by the San Francisco Ballet.

Awards: 2 Cine Golden Eagles, Chris Statuette, Columbus Film Festival, American Film Festival
